Message from Dr. Leo ESAKI
- Director of Tsukuba International Congress Center, President of Tsukuba Science Academy
Dr. Leo Esaki - Graduated from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, The University of Tokyo. A physicist who has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1973), the Order of Culture (1974), and the International Prize of the American Physical Society (1985). His wide-ranging achievements, especially in the field of semiconductor physics, which is the basis of modern electronics, include the discovery of the tunnel effect in semiconductor PN junctions and the proposal and realization of the semiconductor superlattice concept. A researcher who has pioneered a completely new field and has had a major impact on modern condensed matter physics in general.
I have high expectations for the “imagination”
of junior and senior high school students!
Our intelligence can be broadly divided into two categories.
One is the ability to analyze, understand, and judge things, and to discriminate fairly (judicious mind). The other is the ability to create new ideas based on rich creativity and foresight (creative mind). Discernment, having an impersonal aspect, can be said to deal with the known subjects, whereas creativity is individual and challenges the unknown. This creativity is the driving force for the reform and progress and will continue to develop human civilization. I would like to see young people like you develop your creativity.
What is Tsukuba Science Edge?
Discuss with leading scientists!
"Tsukuba Science Edge" is a place to present scientific "ideas" based on school class assignments and club activities, but individual participation is also welcome.
You will have the opportunity to meet many junior and senior high school students from Japan and abroad and discuss ideas for your research presentations.
You will also have the opportunity to have the live discussions with scientific instructors.
The venue for the presentation is the "Tsukuba International Congress Center" where scientists from all over the world gather!
This is your chance to stand on the same stage as real scientists and researchers. Please come and join us at "Tsukuba Science Edge," where you can meet the "cutting edge of science" together with researchers!
Message for Teachers and Parents
Cultivate children's creativity and logical thinking through science!
Conventionally, science-related contests for junior and senior high school students are mainly paper reviews, essay-based contests such as the Japan Student Science Award and JSEC, and the hurdles for children to participate are quite high. Also, as the first steps in science and technology, the steps named “discovering problems” and “constructing hypotheses that nurture the spirit of science” are extremely important for children, but there is quite few places to announce such themes at the idea stage. Therefore, we have established a contest to solicit ideas related to science from middle and high school students who are currently researching science and technology, or who are about to do so, and it will present them opportunities of “meet and discuss” with real researchers.
In this contest, through discussions with scientists and by expert comments, children will notice and experience the “fun of creating” and the “fun of learning and discussing with real researchers.” We have summarized the points of the expert screening in the separately prepared "Startup Checklist", so please check it thoroughly when applying. Beginning with children's creative new ideas, the process, and results of a series of intellectual inquiry activities that develop not only knowledge, but also logical thinking will be judged.
It also provides an opportunity to meet and deepen friendships with presentation teams, visitors, and teachers from all over Japan and abroad, providing a unique opportunity to experience interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange.
Through this contest, we hope to "train young future researchers" in the field of science and technology, provide "a place to develop interest in science and technology at an early stage", and lead to raising the level of "scientific and technological capabilities".
The conference will be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center, which is used by scientists from around the world for academic conferences.
With the cooperation of many institutions, organizations, and universities, Tsukuba Science Edge will also hold a " Special Science Bus Tour” for participants from abroad, visiting surrounding national and corporate institutes, free of charge. (Japanese participants will attend some of workshops; refer to the Japanese Instruction.)
It will be an opportunity not only to develop an interest in science, but also to deepen exchanges with scientists and students from other schools, so please join us.

Points to note regarding presentation
When preparing your abstract and poster, please be sure to read the following points carefully and get your supervisor's final confirmation before submitting. Please be aware that you may be subject to restrictions in the contest's operations or be unable to publish your abstract due to legal violations or misconduct.
If you made revision or corrections by the Judges during the document screening process, your revision will not be printed for the publication of the abstract collection. Your revision will be published in the PDF version released at the later date.
- Submissions that do not involve natural science, such as social sciences or humanities, are not eligible for this contest and will not be judged.
- Please include ideas independently thought by junior and senior high school students (so that it is an idea with a dream). When bringing your research/technical idea to life, please indicate the issues that need to be addressed you think before it can be realized.
- Solutions to such problems or quizzes with their correct answers already existed, are not eligible for this contest and will not be judged.
- There is no longer an "Other" option in the subject category. You must select one subject that corresponds to the academic or technical field that you consider to be the most important and worthy of evaluation.
- Depending on the progress stage of the research, select and apply for either "initial planning stage," "preliminary results," or "research results." If your "early planning stage" research consisting of ideas with absolutely no experimental results, it will not be eligible for review. It is better to include some kind of thought experiment or the like to demonstrate the validity of your research plan.
- For "preliminary results" or "research results," please specifically show some actual results, quantitative data and your interpretations. Whenever possible, please attach them to your abstract as specific for the review (not be printed as a part of your abstract).
- The process and raw data, including the results obtained during your experiment, should be kept in a laboratory notebook by your side to prevent any unintended accidents (to prevent suspicion of fabrication or falsification).
- Existing research results by yourself or your group must be clearly cited. It is inappropriate to describe existing results without citing them, even if they involve you. In other words, the majority of your content must be original to Tsukuba Science Edge 2025 (To prevent suspicion of plagiarism or duplicate submission).
- Acknowledge should be given to individuals and/or organizations (universities, research institutes, companies, etc.) who have supported your research, with a clear statemen of their contributions. This would also help to guarantee to a certain extent the value of your research and the quality of the results.
- If you use a sort of generative AI (such as Chat GPT, Gemini, Copilot… ) in your abstract or presentation, you must record clearly where and how you used it and save the prompt (instructions). There are no restrictions on using it to gather existing results or knowledge, but the development of the discussion and conclusions must be your own unique one. We may ask you questions where AI was used and how it was significant, during the review process.
- Please comply with the laws and regulations of the country or region in which the experiment is conducted, and take the necessary procedures, especially for live organism experiments on humans or animals.
- For human subject experiments in Japan, be sure to state that the experiment has been reviewed by an ethics committee, etc., or that there is no need for review, in accordance with your country’s law. Even if no review is determined necessary, it must be stated that the respect for the subjects' human rights and the protection of their lives, bodies, and minds from an ethical standpoint* have been confirmed.
- *) In addition to the consent of the research subjects who have been informed of the purpose of the research and how the results will be handled, the consent of the parents is also required if the subject is a minor. If personal information is included, the advanced parent's consent is necessary. Not only data that is made public in presentations, but also data that is held in hand as research data must be managed properly, especially in large-scale questionnaire surveys, even if it is not medical research.
- For Japanese delegates: animal experiments other than humans, instructors and affiliations are required to review “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Notification No. 71”. We understood that instruction is being conducted at your schools, etc., based on the purpose of this MEXT notification, and no description is required.
- In addition to research misconduct such as fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, and duplicate submission, any violation of the laws, regulations, and directives of each country and region or any conduct that disrespects human dignity or the environment is discovered, the submissions may be revoked even after the contest has ended and the awards have been presented.
Guideline for Abstract
[ Abstract Form ]
- Please use the official name of the school as the same notation for both the registration and abstract forms.
- Please be sure to specify whether your application is "initial planning stage," "preliminary results," or "research results."
- Please prepare a poster for display. Teams that pass the various screening procedures will give an oral presentation while their posters will be displayed at poster floors. Since monitors are available at the Oral, Satellite, and Booth poster presentations, please prepare presentation data such as PowerPoint.
- You can select the field that applies to you from the names of high school subjects, but depending on your assignment and purpose, such a borderline field or an integrated field is needed. In that case, please refer to the following <Explanation of field-based course selection> bellow and always choose the best fit. Please note that this is a mandatory item for registration, so applications without a field selected will not be reviewed.
- Please note that if the field reflecting the content is not appropriate, the secretariat will change it to the most suitable one.
- The abstract form can be filled in so that the printed output will be up to two A4 pages. If the actual printed output exceeds two A4 pages at the secretariat, only the first two pages will be printed in the abstract collection. You are free to use any font in the form, but please avoid layouts that are too crammed below the set font size. This will make the abstract difficult to read during review and publication. Please also be careful not to overflow the printable page area.
- Please attach explanatory materials such as photographs, charts, etc. that are quantitative as much as possible, and cite them in the abstract. When presenting "preliminary results" or "research results", it is necessary to carry the data of your own scientific speculation and experimental output as an explanatory material.
- We recommend that these explanatory materials such as tables, charts, photos, etc. should be in color. There is no limit to the number of pages for explanatory materials.
- Please prepare the abstract (up to 2 papers of abstract form + explanatory materials) in Microsoft Word format.
- As a general rule, any corrections made after the deadline will not be accepted after registration has been completed. Even if you contact the secretariat before the deadline and receive approval, you will be asked to re-upload all of the data, including the corrections, all at once. In this case, please note that only the final registration will be subject to review, and the data before the corrections will be discarded.
